The Judging Process
|
The judging panels are made up of experts from the worlds of photography and travel. The panel is selected to reflect a variety of backgrounds, styles and attitudes to photography and the photographic image. A key element of the panel is the wealth of technical expertise brought into the mix by our technical and creative judges.
These judges give their time because they love photography, and we are very grateful for their efforts.
The judging of photographic competitions is an arduous process especially when, as with Travel Photographer of the Year, so many entries are received. However the most important element of any judging is that it is done fairly.

Judging is often considered controversial and we all have our own opinions about the winning images. The judges too, have their opinions but we have carefully devised a judging system which removes the bias and personal preference.
Travel Photographer of the Year is judged anonymously so that whether your name is known as a photographer or not does not bias a judge's opinion. As with many competitions, we have sponsors, but these sponsors have never sought to influence the results, nor would they be allowed to, even if they wanted to.

During the judging process, entries are assessed by three different panels of judges. The first panel assesses entries for technical quality; basic elements such as ‘is the image in focus?' and ‘is the focal point correct?'.
The second panel has perhaps the hardest job, deciding whether an image or portfolio meets the criteria for each category. Once this is done, each category is whittled down to the best 30 or so entries for the final round of judging. These judging rounds will be completed by early October.
A new panel of judges is used to choose the winning entries from the shortlisted 30 entries in each category.
In the final rounds, judging is done on a points scoring system, with each judge independently assessing each image and each portfolio on criteria ranging from impact and creativity to composition and originality, but also on how well an entry fits the category theme.
It is worth noting that a good judge has no interest in influencing fellow members of the judging panel in how they score. To be a good competition judge you must love photography and love images but leave your personal preferences at the door and be prepared to respond to the images before you.
